Kagera Zone History
The Kagera Strategic Business Unit (SBU) was established in 2013 as a sales point under the Mwanza Zone and, in 2021, was upgraded into a fully independent unit. The Kagera Zone is situated in the extreme northwestern corner of Tanzania’s mainland, playing a critical role in strengthening healthcare delivery across Kagera Region as well as three councils in the Geita Region namely Mbogwe DC, Chato DC, and Bukombe DC, hence covering a total of eleven (11)councils.
Service Area and Coverage
According to the 2022 Tanzania Population and Housing Census, the MSD Kagera Zone serves a total of 4,344,219 people. This Population is represented as follows; Kagera Region - 2,989,299 people, Geita Region (Mbogwe District) - 362,855 people, Chato District - 584,963 people, and Bukombe District - 407,102 people.
The Kagera Zone plays a crucial role in ensuring the reliable supply of quality pharmaceutical and medical products to a total of 477 health facilities, ranging from primary to tertiary levels, including:
1. Tertiary and Secondary Institutions - 1 Zonal Referal Hospital, and 1 Regional Referral hospital.
2. Primary Health Facilities, including 11 District Hospitals under the President’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (PO-RALG), 6 Designated district hospital, 53 health centers, 341 dispensaries,
3. Faith-Based and Other Institutions- 5 faith-based hospitals, and 59 other hospitals
Through this extensive network, MSD Kagera Zone ensures last-mile delivery of health commodities to even the most remote areas, strengthening the overall public healthcare system.
Storage and Operational Capacity
The Medical Stores Kagera Zone operates a 930-square-meter warehouse, equipped to handle, store, and distribute a wide range of health commodities under strict compliance with Good Storage and Distribution Practices (GSDP). To support timely and efficient deliveries, the zone manages a fleet of 13 distribution vehicles of varying capacities, ensuring seamless logistics across all service regions.
Behind its operational excellence is a dedicated team of 26 professionals, including logistics specialists, pharmacists, accountants, sales representatives, customer service officers, bio-technicians, and drivers. Their expertise and commitment enable MSD Kagera Zone to maintain high service standards, ensuring the availability, quality, and accessibility of health commodities throughout its service area.
