Tabora Zone History
Established in 1997, the Tabora Zone is one of MSD’s longest-serving zones and a vital hub in MSD’s national supply chain network for healthcare supplies in western Tanzania. Tabora zonal offices are Located in Tabora Municipality, and the it serves a total of three regions namely Tabora, Katavi and Kigoma.
Service Area and Coverage
According to the 2022 Tanzania Population and Housing Census, the MSD Tabora Zone serves 7,015,604 people. This refers to a combined population of the Tabora, Katavi, and Kigoma regions as follows: Tabora Region: 3,391,679 people, Katavi Region: 1,152,958 people, Kigoma Region: 2,470,967 people.
Tabora Zone plays a crucial role in ensuring the reliable supply of quality pharmaceutical and medical products to a total of 842 health facilities, ranging from primary to tertiary levels, including:
1. Tertiary and Secondary Institutions include three 3 Regional Referral hospital.
2. Primary health facilities, including 21 District hospitals under the President’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (PO-RALG), 1 designated district hospital, 95 health centers, and 705 dispensaries,
3. Faith-Based and Other Institutions – 16 Faith-Based hospitals
Through this extensive network, MSD Tabora Zone ensures last-mile delivery of health commodities to even the most remote areas, strengthening the overall public healthcare system.
Storage and Operational Capacity
The Medical Stores Tabora Zone operates a modern 2,700-square-meter warehouse, equipped to handle, store, and distribute a wide range of health commodities under strict compliance with Good Storage and Distribution Practices (GSDP). To support timely and efficient deliveries, the zone manages a fleet of 17 distribution vehicles of varying capacities, ensuring seamless logistics across all service regions.
Behind its operational excellence is a dedicated team of 41 professionals, including logistics specialists, pharmacists, accountants, sales representatives, customer service officers, bio-technicians, and drivers. Their expertise and commitment enable the MSD Tabora Zone to maintain high service standards, ensuring the availability, quality, and accessibility of health commodities throughout its service area.
