The Medical Stores Department (MSD), established as a corporate body wholly owned by the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania, has served public health facilities across the country for over 30 years. MSD continues to innovate and maintain efficient, secure, and cost-effective systems across its four key functions: Production, Procurement, Storage, and Distribution of health commodities to public and other approved health facilities.
MSD remains committed to supporting Government initiatives aimed at strengthening the healthcare supply chain by ensuring the continuous availability of high-quality and reliable health commodities. To achieve this, MSD employs a diverse range of health professionals capable of meeting and addressing the varied needs of health facilities.
As a major player in the health sector, MSD is undertaking a reform process to enhance its performance and respond effectively to the emerging needs and expectations of its stakeholders. The key focus areas of this transformation include strengthening engagement with local manufacturers to build supply chain resilience, leveraging technological advancements to improve forecasting and management of health commodities, adopting strategic sourcing to ensure availability, affordability, and competitiveness, and enhancing financial sustainability through revolving financing for health commodities.
In its ongoing operations, MSD aims to expand its commercial presence through strategic partnerships within the pharmaceutical supply chain and by investing in warehouse and distribution infrastructure to meet growing demand. These initiatives are being implemented in full compliance with the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) framework. Collectively, these efforts are designed to realize MSD’s vision of becoming a “Centre of Excellence for Health Commodities Supply Chain in Africa.”
