Vertical Programs Unit
The Vertical Programs (VP) Unit at the Medical Stores Department (MSD) serves as a cornerstone in Tanzania’s public-health supply chain, ensuring the coordinated availability of medicines and medical supplies for national disease-control initiatives. These programs focus on priority health areas such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, immunization, and reproductive and child health — directly contributing to improved national health outcomes.
Originally managed independently under the Ministry of Health, each program operated its own logistics system, resulting in duplication of resources and inefficiencies. In 1996, the Government of Tanzania integrated all vertical program logistics functions under MSD to streamline operations, reduce costs, and strengthen accountability in the supply chain.
Today, the Unit manages the procurement, storage, and distribution of program commodities in close collaboration with major development partners, including the Global Fund, UNICEF, World Health Organization (WHO), and USAID. This integrated model ensures the timely, transparent, and efficient delivery of donor-funded commodities to health facilities nationwide.
Through robust coordination mechanisms, harmonized systems, and strict adherence to quality standards, the Vertical Programs Unit reinforces MSD’s mission to provide a reliable, efficient, and sustainable supply chain for life-saving health commodities across Tanzania.
