Mwanza Zone
Established in 1993, the Mwanza Zone of the Medical Stores Department (MSD) plays a central role in ensuring the availability of health commodities across the Lake Zone regions. The Zone provides services to Mwanza, Shinyanga, Mara, and Simiyu Regions, as well as selected districts in Geita Region (Nyang’hwale, Geita Municipal, and Geita District Council) due to their geographical proximity and logistical efficiency.
Service Area and Coverage
According to the 2022 Tanzania Population and Housing Census, the Mwanza Zone serves a combined population of 12,076,371 people. This total includes populations from the following regions and districts: Mwanza Region – 3,699,872 people, Simiyu Region – 2,140,497 people, Shinyanga Region – 2,241,299 people, Mara Region – 2,372,015 people, Nyang’hwale District (Geita Region) – 225,803 people, Geita Municipal (Geita Region) – 361,671 people, Geita District Council (Geita Region) – 1,035,214 people).
The zone serves a customer base of over 1,420 health facilities, ranging from primary to tertiary levels, including:
1. Tertiary and Secondary Institutions includes 1 Zonal Referall hospital and 5 Regional Referral hospital.
2. Primary Health Facilities, including 31 District hospitals under the the President’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (PO-RALG), 4 District designated hospitals, 153 health centers, 1207 Dispensaries.
3. Faith-Based and Other Institutions – 19 other hospitals
Through this extensive network, MSD Mwanza Zone ensures last-mile delivery of health commodities to even the most remote areas, strengthening the overall public healthcare system.
Storage and Operational Capacity
The MSD Mwanza Zone operates a modern 2,742-square-meter warehouse, equipped to handle, store, and distribute a wide range of health commodities under strict compliance with Good Storage and Distribution Practices (GSDP).
To support timely and efficient deliveries, the zone manages a fleet of 21 distribution vehicles of varying capacities, ensuring seamless logistics across all service regions.
Behind its operational excellence is a dedicated team of 51 professionals, including logistics specialists, pharmacists, accountants, sales representatives, customer service officers, bio-technicians, and drivers. Their expertise and commitment enable MSD Mwanza Zone to maintain high service standards, ensuring the availability, quality, and accessibility of health commodities throughout its service area.
