Tanga Zone History
The MSD Tanga Zone was firstly established in 2015 as a Sales Point under the Kilimanjaro Zone (formerly known as Moshi Zone). In 2019, the Sales Point was upgraded into a full Zonal Office to strengthen health commodities service delivery and expand its coverage. This Zone has since grown into a key hub in MSD’s national supply chain network, strategically serving the northern part of Tanzania. MSD Tanga Zone serves the Tanga region which has a total of 11 districts, as well as the Same District from the Kilimanjaro Region.

Service Area and Coverage
According to the 2022 Tanzania Population and Housing Census, the Tanga Zone serves a combined population of 2,915,900 people. This total includes populations from the following regions and districts: Tanga Region - Kilindi District – 398,391 people, Tanga City Council – 393,429 people, Handeni District (Rural) – 384,353 people, Lushoto District – 350,958 people, Korogwe District (Rural) – 272,870 people, Muheza District – 238,260 people, Bumbuli District – 159,373 people, Mkinga District – 146,802 people, Handeni Town Council – 108,968 people, Korogwe Town Council – 86,551 people, Pangani District – 75,642 people, and Same District from Kilimanjaro with 300,303 population.

The Zone currently serves fifteen (15) councils  a total of 612 health facilities, ranging from primary to tertiary levels, including:
1. Tertiary and Secondary Institutions 1 specialized hospital, and 2 Regional Referral hospital.

2. Primary Health Facilities, including 12 District Hospitals under the President’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (PO-RALG), 2 Designated district hospital, 43 health centers, 528 dispensaries,

3. Faith-Based and Other Institutions- 5 faith-based hospitals, and 25 other hospitals 
Through this extensive network, MSD Tanga Zone ensures last-mile delivery of health commodities to even the most remote areas, strengthening the overall public healthcare system.

Storage and Operational Capacity
To effectively serve this broad network of customers, the zone operates with a 4,218 square meters of storage facility and 12 distribution vehicles (land-crusers and trucks), enabling efficient handling, storage, and distribution of medical commodities while maintaining high standards of quality and safety.
Behind its success is a dedicated team of 31 professionals, including logistics specialists, pharmacists, accountants, sales representatives, customer service officers, biotechnicians, and drivers. Their combined expertise ensures that the zone continues to strengthen the availability and accessibility of essential medicines and medical supplies, thereby enhancing healthcare delivery and optimizing distribution within its service areas.
