MSD Workers’ Council Sets Strategic Direction to Strengthen Availability of Health Commodities in Tanzania

The Medical Stores Department (MSD) has concluded its 27th Workers’ Council Meeting with a series of strategic resolutions aimed at strengthening the availability of health commodities, enhancing institutional efficiency and improving service delivery to citizens and stakeholders in the health sector.
The two-day meeting, held in Dodoma, was officially opened and chaired by the Director General of MSD and Chairperson of the Workers’ Council, Mr. Mavere Tukai. The meeting brought together management and workers’ representatives to deliberate on the institution’s progress, operational challenges and strategic priorities for improving the performance of MSD.
Speaking during the closing session, Mr. Tukai commended MSD employees for their continued professionalism, commitment and dedication in executing their responsibilities, noting that their collective efforts have enabled the institution to continue fulfilling its mandate of ensuring timely and reliable access to health commodities for the public.
“The achievements attained by MSD are a result of teamwork, accountability and the dedication demonstrated by our employees. We must continue upholding integrity, innovation and prudent use of institutional resources in order to improve productivity and strengthen service delivery to the public,” said Mr. Tukai.
During the meeting, the Workers’ Council placed strong emphasis on improving stock availability of medicines, medical supplies and other health commodities across the country through strengthened supply chain management, storage systems and distribution mechanisms.
Strategic Priorities Endorsed by the Council
1. Strengthening Availability of Health Commodities
The Council reaffirmed MSD’s commitment to ensuring continuous availability of medicines, medical equipment and other essential health commodities in health facilities nationwide, with the objective of improving healthcare services and minimizing shortages within the health system.
2. Enhancing Recovery of Government Debts
The meeting also underscored the importance of strengthening government debt recovery mechanisms to improve the institution’s financial sustainability and support uninterrupted supply of health commodities.
3. Expansion of Modern Storage Infrastructure
In response to the growing demand for storage capacity, MSD will continue investing in the construction of modern warehouses to enhance storage efficiency, maintain product quality standards and support nationwide distribution operations.
4. Investment in Renewable Energy Solutions
The Council commended ongoing investments in renewable energy initiatives through the Victory Project, the use of gas-powered vehicles and solar energy technologies aimed at reducing operational costs and promoting environmental sustainability.
These initiatives align with both national and global efforts to promote clean energy adoption and sustainable operations within public institutions.
5. Institutional and Digital Reforms
As part of efforts to improve operational efficiency, MSD continues to implement institutional reforms alongside digital transformation initiatives, including the rollout of a new Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system designed to strengthen accountability, transparency and resource management across the institution.
6. Expansion of Local Manufacturing of Health Products
The Council further emphasized the importance of continued investment in local production of health commodities through MSD Medipharm in order to increase domestic availability of essential products and reduce dependence on imports.
This initiative forms part of broader national efforts to strengthen health commodity security and build resilient local manufacturing capacity following global supply chain disruptions experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic.
